Sloban [sLɔban] (slop-an) is the Scottish Gaelic word for a puddle and it surely comes as no surprise to anyone who has visited or lived in Scotland that water crops up in conversation a lot, either in relation to the weather or the loch-covered landscape and miles of sea shore. It has been estimated that there are at least 31,460 freshwater lochs (including lochans) in Scotland, with more than 7,500 in the Western Isles alone and a coastline which measures 11,602 miles (18,672 km) when you include the circumferences of almost 900 islands, roughly 100 of which are inhabited.
